A storage-focused kitchen renovation for a Nashville couple and their pets

Two dogs, three cats and a very persuasive couple. Designer Sarah Robertson, Director of Westchester County, NY Dearborn Studio was hesitant to accept a new client in Nashville. That was until she heard the briefing. The client “requested Silver Fox bricks salvaged from her hometown in Wisconsin, a super-organized kitchen for easy cooking and entertaining, and most importantly, plenty of room for the ‘Furry Five’, as the family calls their pets, to roam,” said Robertson. The work was hard to resist.

First came the order request. Cabinet doors and drawers now open to reveal built-in knife blocks, space for coffee pods, slots for kitchen utensil lids, vertical storage for cutting boards and, of course, pet food bins (Robertson is famous on TikTok for his custom storage solutions). Three undercounter trash cans and recycling bins on the sink wall, including one strategically placed under Robertson’s signature sliding paper towel rack, make cleanup a breeze.

As for that requested brick? The designer used it only on the kitchen walls that face the outside of the house, a move that deceives the eye seeing it as an exterior wall at first glance. Having carte blanche for the choice of colors and materials, she completed the brickwork: soapstone on the counters and behind the stove, marble on the island, painted and oak Shaker doors. Rather than a towering island, Robertson added one with a smaller footprint that leaves extra-wide aisles for the Furry Five to position themselves for scraps.

Robertson chose to use soapstone behind the range because real brick, especially in this lighter color, would have been impossible to keep intact. Cabinets: Studio Dearborn painted Black Horizon, Benjamin Moore. Interval: Dacor. Pendants and wall lights: Lighting Circa. Layouts: California taps. Soapstone: Polycor. Brick: The Brickyard, Inc. Saddles: ancient. Soapstone: Polycor. Brick: The Brickyard, Inc. Lamp: Crate and barrel.

A simple power system was essential. Under the counter, a pot filler combined with an undermount bar sink (with a drain and stopper!) serves as a water bowl that never runs dry.

The main prep area at the end of the island houses all of the owners cutting boards and knives and is directly opposite the main sink and trash cans for easy cutting and disposal.

Realizing that a wall of fridge and freezer space would eliminate room for a coffee bar, Robertson came up with a freezer drawer instead. Contents: lots of coffee and Jeni’s ice cream.

To rid his customers’ counters of dish drying racks, Robertson custom-designed the Steppe Deep Sink. It’s extra-long, with a raised platform inside to hold a drying rack out of sight but within reach.
