New business in downtown Oshkosh specializes in vintage items

OSHKOSH — It might take a little more work to find what you’re looking for at the new downtown vintage store, but the result can be more rewarding.

Unlike retail stores, with multiples of each item and many sizes, owner Victor Kielman said everything in his store is one of a kind.

Each piece is unique: we have this specific jersey,” Kielman said. “If it’s your size and you like it, take it. It’s unique to you, and that makes it fun.”

01 Vintage is set to officially open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at its new location at 415 N. Main St. — the former Olive & Rose store, which closed in April.

The shop specializes in vintage t-shirts, ranging from band t-shirts to races to cartoons and more. The store also sells pants, hats, and various trinkets and collectibles, with many items from the 1980s and 90s.

A selection of vintage T-shirts are on display Tuesday at 01 Vintage, 415 N. Main St. Owner Victor Kielman has been collecting vintage clothing and collectibles for 4.5 years.

Kielman, from Fond du Lac, has been collecting clothes and vintage items since late 2017, but he’s had an interest in clothes since high school. He said he and his friends were into fashion, especially designer clothes, but couldn’t afford it. It was then that they discovered the art of saving.

He began selling his finds in 2018 via Instagram and locally at pop-up shops like Fifth Ward’s Vintage Market, then as VK Vintage.

Her favorite part is finding it all: whether it’s browsing local garage sales, thrift stores and even Facebook Marketplace to find the right pieces.

“I had so much fun finding this stuff,” he said. “I hope people enjoy it as much as I do.”

Kielman dreamed of opening a storefront and said it all fell into place this spring. Just three days after graduating with an associate’s degree from UW-Oshkosh’s Fond du Lac campus, he saw a listing for the North Main Street building that was up for rent.

“I saw how perfect it was, with the dressing room ready to go, and we just had to build it,” he said. “It really was perfect timing.”

He decided to name it 01 Vintage in reference to his year of birth.

The new vintage store, 01 Vintage, is introduced Tuesday at 415 N. Main St. The store is located in the former Olive & Rose boutique.

He estimates he now has around 4,000 pieces of clothing and until the opening he was sorting through the huge piles to decide what to sell first.

His goal with the storefront is to provide affordable vintage items and to have “at least one thing for everyone who comes here.” Items vary in sizes – you just need to find it.

“People have to go through all of this and see if they like something, which might sound weird, but that’s how it’s done,” he said. “You never know what you’re going to come out with.”

01 Vintage will be open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday and closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Those hours may change as it determines what works best for its customers, he said. Follow 01 Vintage on Instagram and TikTok at @01vintage_ and be on the hunt for a website — Kielman said he’s been working on starting one.
