Thrilling Curates A Black-Owned Vintage Collection for Black History Month

On Tuesday, February 1, Thrilling, a Black and Asian-owned online marketplace, launched its line of vintage Black-owned pieces, following its recent collaboration with award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter. The carefully curated selection spotlights Black-owned businesses and boutiques from across the United States, with an array of unique apparel and accessories.

In the latest launch, you can expect to find hundreds of eclectic pieces ranging from patterned blouses to ruffled dresses, plus nostalgic silhouettes, including ’90s designer items and more. Through this collection, Thrilling CEO and Co-Founder Shilla Kim-Parker is rewriting the narrative of thrift and secondhand shopping by elevating marginalized voices and Black-owned businesses in the process. Since its inception in 2018, the vintage label has offered coveted inventory in both physical vintage storefronts and the online realm. Although Kim-Parker has loved scoring new second-hand finds over the years, she’s noticed the huge disparity when it comes to BIPOC-owned stores, especially with the rise of the resale economy.

In a recent article by The New York Times,”According to a McKinsey report, only 4% of black businesses survive the start-up stage, with many black-owned stores having been neglected for decades, historically facing lack of access to capital as well as racism and to discrimination. Fashion is undoubtedly a powerful means of expression in black communities, and concepts such as “upcycling” and “reworking” have been part of black households for generations.

“They’ve been completely left out of the conversation,” Kim-Parker told NYLON in a 2020 interview about helping vintage brick-and-mortar stores grow in e-commerce. “They have billions of items of incredible vintage that sit in digital obscurity. So we help them go online. Today, Thrilling is home to over 600 stores and 1,000 boutiques, with over 95% of its stores and vendors owned by women and BIPOC – and they’re not stopping there.
