NEW YORK – After 40 years in business, Cobblestones has established a reputation among visitors.
“They still describe it as a treasure,” owner Delanee Koppersmith said. “That’s a lot in a small space.”
The East Village vintage store‘s distinctive collection reflects the flair of its owner.
“I like things that are a little weird and a little different,” she said. “That’s kind of been my rule of thumb for all these years.”
Delanee grew up a few blocks away and fell into fashion by accident.
“The first thing I sold was this beautiful blue glass bead belt – it was $45.00 – and I was like, ‘Well, here we are,'” she said. .
At Cobblestones, she specializes in 1930s and 1940s clothing and accessories.
“I love silhouettes from those particular eras,” she said.
For Delanee, a good outfit has the power to boost morale.
“I just think people, in general, when they’re dressed, they feel different and they carry themselves differently,” she said.
Sometimes fashion designers stop by the store in search of inspiration.
“It could be the material or the shape of a bag or the heel of a shoe,” she said.
But the doors of Cobblestone are open to everyone.
“I recommend everyone go vintage,” she said. “I just think it’s a lot of fun that a person’s personality is shown on the outside.”
